Symptom

Your Wordpress website works more or less, but displays error messages in the middle of the text flow on the page, which should actually only be written to the error log, but should not be displayed. The default setting of PHP that PHP errors should not be displayed on the screen has not been changed.

Cause

Wordpress has a "debug" mode that can be turned on with a variable in the wp-config.php file. Debug mode helps developers quickly identify and fix bugs in the script. For the development of websites the debug mode can be helpful. In productive operation, it should be shut down in order not to open vulnerabilities to attackers.

When Wordpress outputs error messages directly, the debug variable is set to true.

Solution

To disable debug mode, open the file "wp-config.php" and change the line

define ('WP_DEBUG', true);

to

define ('WP_DEBUG', false);
