Symptom

In other FAQ articles I am asked to enter the “host name”. I realize that this is not my domain name, but where do I find the host name?

Solution

The host name is the name of the computer in the data center where your web space has been installed. The host name is needed for example for SSL encrypted connections to the mail server, because the mail server uses a suitable SSL certificate for the host name.

At Bitpalace, hosts are named [name].bitpalast.net, for example elbe.bitpalast.net, rhein.bitpalast.net and so on. The host name only consists of [name].bitpalast.net. It neither uses a prefix like http:// or https://, nor a port number ending like :8443. The name of your host can be obtained by any of these ways:

1) You can look into the server welcome mail. In the sections “web space control panel” and “FTP” you will find the host name.

2) In Windows you can choose Start > Run and execute cmd.exe (the Windows command line), then enter the ping command with the -a parameter and the IP address of your host, for example:

ping -a 136.243.78.203

returns the pings, but it also mentions the name: elbe.bitpalast.net.
