Symptom

You want to create big mailboxes for many users. When you add the mailbox sizes up, your total disk space is exceeded. On the other hand mailboxes are only rarely used, so that the total of all mails that are really stored, will be less than the total web space you are leasing.

Solution

“Overbooking” is a common practice with webspace and mail accounts. The disk space that is guaranteed for single users is normally much bigger than the disk space users truly use. For example, when you offer 1 GB per mailbox to 100 users, it is very unlikely that all 100 users will completely use that 1 GB. There will be mailboxes that stay empty, some will only by occupied by few mails (a few hundred bytes), some might reach the 1 GB limit. The total of all mailboxes will probably reach no more than 20 GB.

For that reason it is possible that you offer more disk space to your users than what you have leased in your hosting plan. For example, if you are leasing 50 GB disk space in your hosting plan, you can still create 100 mailxboxes at 1 GB each or 200 at 5 GB and so on.

If you are struggeling and your users do store so many mails that the total web space of your hosting plan becomes insufficient, you can upgrade your plan to up to 1 GB (1024 GB) disk space.
