Symptom

You want to block all users from opening certain files or directories, but you want to allow some IP addresses and networks to access these files anyway.

Solution

Scenario 1: Blocking a specific file

Create a text file in the directory that contains the file you want to block and name the text file ".htaccess" or edit an existing .htaccess file:

Order allow,deny
Allow from xxx.xxx[.xxx[.xxx]]
Deny from all

Instead of [filename] enter the name of the file that you want to block. Instead of "xxx.xxx[.xxx[.xxx]]" enter the IP address or part of the address for that the file shall remain accessible. For instance, when you want to allow computers using the IP 198.162.200.101, .102, .103 to access your file, enter: 198.162.200 (do not add an asterisk "*" as a wildcard, simply omit the last octet and the period in front of it.)

Scenario 2: Blocking a specific directory

Create a text file in the directory that you want to block and name it ".htaccess" or edit an existing .htaccess file:

Order allow,deny
Allow from xxx.xxx[.xxx[.xxx]]
Deny from all
